Bring On The Heartburn!

Imagine . . . you have been following Jesus throughout his ministry . . . watching His miracles . . . seeing His compassion . . . amazed by His authority and teaching . . . and, then, witnessing the horrific flogging, torture, and crucifixion. He was supposed to be the One who would set them free from the Roman oppression . . . their Messiah . . .their Savior. But more than that, He was their friend. They had dropped everything to follow Him. He served and loved them like no one else. And now, He was dead. Or so they thought. . . .

On the Road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13-35, two disciples would get one of the most famous episodes of heartburn ever! Depressed, sad, confused, hopeless, they walked a seven-mile journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. And, Jesus Himself, resurrected from the dead, casually joins them on their walk inquiring why they are so downcast. They didn’t recognize Him. God does have a sense of humor, huh???!!

As the story goes, “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” Luke 24:27 Talk about a dining experience with Jesus!!! Can you just imagine Him telling them about Abraham and Isaac or the animal sacrifices and offerings or the feasts of Israel or the bronze serpent on the pole or the hundreds of prophesies in the Old Testament and on and on. "IT WAS ALL ABOUT ME", He would explain.

After, they invite Him to stay with them, and the Bible says “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:30-32. And they proceeded to walk seven miles BACK to Jerusalem with excitement and vigor! He restored their joy, their energy and their hope.

EAT and SEE Jesus in the Word . . . His love and goodness toward you, His character, His glory . . . . SEE His broken body and sacrifice for YOU on the cross and you will have a heart passionately burning for Him.

So, bring on the HEART BURN!!!
